5 reasons why you should avoid plastic lunch boxes

Plastkifrei in Outdoor - Nachhaltigkeit Blog Alpin Loacker

The great American writer Normal Mailer once said: "Sometimes I think there's a malevolent force in the universe that is the social equivalent of cancer, and it's plastic. It infiltrates everything. It's metastasized. It gets into every single pore of productive life. "

You would think that this was a topical quote, something he might have said after the green movement became popular. But no - he said it in 1983, before America's obsession with all things plastic had reached its peak. What amazing foresight he had.

Plastic has its role in Modern Society. It is an essential part of our cars, computers, cell phones, children's toys - and virtually everything we use every day.

The bottom line is that plastic is made from toxic materials. It's a known fact that these toxins can leach into anything they come in contact with. And it is a known fact that when the compounds that make up plastic are ingested, they damage your body at the cellular level and cause health problems.

Here are 5 reasons why you should avoid plastic containers.

1. toxic compounds in plastic can make you sick.

It is typical to suffer from a variety of health problems as you get older. But is that just "part of getting older"? Or is this perhaps the result of toxic overload in the body? It is common knowledge that diseases and disorders such as cancer, Alzheimer's, arthritis, heart disease, vision problems and many other health problems are on the rise. Could this somehow be linked to the increasing amount of plastic in our lives? Plastic food and beverage containers became popular recently (in the 1970s) and have been ubiquitous in our lives ever since. More and more research is proving that toxic compounds found in plastic are causing health problems ranging from cancer to infertility.

2. there is no such thing as a safe plastic.

Plastics that contain the highly toxic compound Bisphenol A (BPA), have been in the news a lot lately. Because of this, consumers believe that a product that contains "BPA-free" is, is completely safe. But that is not true.

Many companies have realized that they can sell more of a product if it is labeled "BPA-free." But guess what? It may be BPA-free, but in its place, these companies are using BPS, a close relative of BPA that can be just as toxic!

BPS shares many of the beneficial properties of BPA, but unfortunately it has another property in common with BPA: it also mimics estrogen, which means it's just as unhealthy for us as the BPA it replaces. Of course, not all BPA-free products contain BPS, but the problem is that there is no way to know which ones to avoid.

The bottom line is - you can't be 100% confident that it doesn't contain plastic which are toxic to your body.

3. plastics can cause fertility and reproductive problems.

The ability to conceive a healthy child is a miraculous wonder and an amazing event in life. But toxic compounds found in plastics could make this difficult, if not impossible, for millions of people. What was once speculation is now becoming fact as more and more research proves that this is a very real problem.

For example, almost all plastics contain toxic chemicals that negatively affect immunity and hormone regulation, which directly affect fertility. In particular, BPA has been found to make it more difficult for women to become pregnant and to cause an increased risk of miscarriage. New research also shows that toxins found in plastic can cause birth defects and developmental problems in children.

4. chemicals in plastic can lead to obesity

There are many reasons why nearly two-thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese. But one of them may be the large amount of plastic our food and drinks come into contact with. After all, America is the world's largest consumer of single-use plastic containers.

Interesting new research published in Environmental Health Perspectives explains that a chemical widely used in plastics, bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), can actually cause stem cells to become fat cells. According to one of the study's authors, "Exposure to these types of chemicals can reprogram your metabolism and make it more likely for you to store calories instead of letting them pass through."

5. Plastics are terrible for our planet.

Whether you're a hardcore environmentalist or "green" is low on your priority list, the fact is that you live on planet Earth, as do your children and your children's children. We all have a responsibility to keep the planet as livable as possible.

First, plastics are most often made from petrochemicals, through an energy-intensive process that itself creates a lot of pollution and toxic discharges. The fact is that every plastic container makes the planet less habitable
. In addition, most plastics in the world are not recycled and usually end up in landfills where they degrade very slowly.
